An Open Work Permit allows you to work for any employer in Canada without needing a specific job offer or a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). It is ideal for individuals who want to gain Canadian work experience while enjoying the flexibility to choose or change employers.

What Is an Open Work Permit?
Unlike employer-specific work permits, an open work permit is not tied to one job or employer. It gives you the freedom to:

Work for any eligible employer in Canada
Switch jobs without reapplying for a new permit
Gain diverse work experience

Who Is Eligible?
You may be eligible for an open work permit if you are:

A spouse or common-law partner of a skilled worker or international student
An international graduate under the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program (PGWP)
An applicant for permanent residence under certain immigration streams (e.g., inland sponsorship)
A refugee, protected person, or someone under special public policies

Common Programs That Offer Open Work Permits

1. Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)

For international students graduating from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI)
Valid up to 3 years, depending on the length of your program
No job offer needed

2. Spousal Open Work Permit

For spouses/common-law partners of:
Skilled workers (NOC TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3)
Full-time international students
Canadian citizens or PRs being sponsored inland
Gives full-time work rights during your spouse’s/partner’s valid status

3. Bridging Open Work Permit (BOWP)

For applicants who have applied for permanent residence under eligible programs
Allows you to keep working while waiting for PR decision

4. Open Work Permit for Vulnerable Workers

For temporary foreign workers facing abuse or risk of abuse
Provides the ability to leave unsafe work environments and find new employment

5. Humanitarian and Compassionate Grounds / Public Policy OWPs
