Post-graduation Work Permit
The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) allows international students who have completed eligible programs at Canadian institutions to gain valuable work experience in Canada. It’s an open work permit, meaning you can work for any employer, in any location, full-time.
Who Is Eligible for a PGWP?
You may be eligible if:
You completed a full-time program of at least 8 months at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI)
Your program led to a degree, diploma, or certificate
You maintained full-time student status throughout your studies (with some exceptions)
You apply within 180 days of receiving your final transcript and official completion letter
Note: Not all programs or institutions qualify—check your school’s DLI eligibility before enrolling.
PGWP Validity
The length of the work permit depends on your program duration:
8 months to <2 years → PGWP valid for same length as your program
2 years or more → PGWP valid for up to 3 years
If you completed multiple programs, the durations may be combined
